Whether you’re traveling for work or pleasure, looking stylish and put-together at the airport is key. In this blog post, we will provide 40 airport outfit ideas for your next trip. These outfits are comfortable and chic, and will help you make a great impression when you step off the plane.
Bring layers.
Here’s the thing: planes can be cold. The air pressure will make your ears pop and feel strange, and the cabin pressure may leave you feeling slightly sick or disoriented. And then there’s the simple fact that it’s not your house/apartment/room, so temperatures may be different than what your body is accustomed to. Your first line of defense against all of this is to bring layers so you can put them on or take them off as needed. (Also, a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer never hurts.)
No matter what season it is when you’re flying, we definitely recommend bringing a jacket or cardigan—something with sleeves. You could even go big and try a hoodie if you want to stay extra warm (and look super fly). We also recommend wearing long pants like jeans or leggings, because legs tend to get chilly when there are drafts in the air (and because everyone around you will probably be wearing long pants anyway).
In extreme cases where the temperature in an airplane cabin really isn’t working for you, using some of your layers to make yourself more comfortable while sleeping can seriously help improve your experience onboard. Try twisting a scarf into a makeshift “pillow” for support and warmth for your head and neck. If you need further comfort measures, consider wrapping yourself up like a burrito in any spare blankets from the plane if they’re available—the fabric-y warmth feels amazing!
Wear flat shoes with arch support.
- Wear flat shoes with arch support. This will make your feet feel better and make you look more polished than if you wore something like flip-flops, which aren’t good for your feet and may impede airport security.
- It’s a good idea to bring socks that match each pair of shoes. Socks help protect from blisters on long flights, when your feet swell in the enclosed space of a plane. You don’t want to be left with open blisters that increase the risk of infection or other health problems.
- A pair of flats will take up less space in luggage than heels, but they are still substantial enough that it’s worth packing an extra pair in your carry-on bag. This way, if you lose your luggage or it gets delayed for any reason (like the weather), you’ll be prepared with an extra set of shoes to wear until it arrives.
Choose breathable fabrics.
When selecting clothing for a flight, you should choose fabrics that are breathable and will allow air flow to your body. Cotton is a great choice, as it’s soft, allows your skin to breathe, and is easy to clean.
The fabric doesn’t make you sweat too much either. Avoid synthetic fabrics like nylon or polyester. These materials don’t allow air to circulate well and make you sweat more than other fabrics.
You should also avoid heavy fabrics like denim or wool which may be uncomfortable on a long-haul flight where you already have limited legroom. You should also avoid any fabric that’s difficult to clean (like silk), can easily stain (like white or light-colored material), or gets wrinkled very easily (such as linen).
Dress in neutral colors.
- Dress in neutral colors. You might be looking to make a statement at the airport or on your flight, but dressing in loud patterns, bright colors, and flashy accessories is often seen as unprofessional. You may be subject to unwanted attention from travelers or TSA agents if you choose to wear things that are distracting or a little out of the norm. However, you can still express your personal style by wearing a few key pieces that reflect your unique taste.
- Some of the best colors to wear when flying are black, navy, grey, and brown. These colors are not only easy to mix and match with other items in your wardrobe, but they’re also less likely to show dirt.
- Avoid jewelry and accessories. If you’re planning on wearing some flashy bling to your flight, keep in mind that it will likely get caught on something during security and cause delays for yourself and anyone behind you in line. Additionally, there are opportunities for pickpockets when moving through large airports with high traffic volume, so wearing fewer items of value (or no items at all) can help reduce this risk.
- Of course, if you do decide to wear jewelry or other accessories through the airport, keep them tightly in your hands or secure them safely inside a small bag you can easily reach into when needed so they don’t fall off and get lost during travel. Some travelers choose not to wear anything at all while traveling through the airport to avoid any unexpected situations they have no way of controlling!
Don’t wear anything that you don’t mind getting lost, wrinkled, or spilled on.
No amount of Lysol wipes can keep airplanes germ-free. We’re talking about a small, enclosed space where people have been eating, sleeping and potentially sneezing/coughing/spilling/etc. since you got on the plane. There’s a good chance the seat you’ll be sitting in has had food spilled on it at some point during its operational life, and let’s not even talk about those wheels up, tray tables down big meals with their tendency to spill on your lap (though this is actually a great excuse to put on an adult bib). And if airplane seats are gross, just imagine what happens when airline staff—who certainly don’t have all day to wipe down every little surface—try to clean them.
The bottom line: don’t wear anything that you wouldn’t feel comfortable donating or tossing out after your flight (unless you want to test out those new disinfectant products for yourself).
These outfits make flying more enjoyable and comfortable.
- A comfy sweatshirt. Don’t overthink it—you want to be comfortable. And you don’t want to worry about spilling food on your clothes or wrinkling your shirt if you’re planning to change later.
- Something soft and flexible. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, especially around the waist. You’ll want a bit of give in your clothing so that you can move around as necessary during the flight and keep yourself comfortable for as long as possible. Take into account any activities or weather conditions that might make some clothes more practical than others, such as hiking or rainstorms.
- Consider the climate at your destination, dress code at any events you’ll be attending, and climate of the plane itself when choosing what to wear on a plane. Additionally, consider comfort above all else: no fashion statement is worth having a miserable time on your trip. Sometimes all it takes is a few minor adjustments to make traveling more enjoyable!
